Enter through Sibely's (sp) just West of Rust Belt Books, and proceed to the pass-through door near the bathrooms in back.  This is an open meeting of regional progressive organizers who are committed to setting aside differences and working together on projects of common interest.  The group has organized successful collaborative anti-war rallies, major bus trips for out of town demonstrations, mini activist fairs, presentations and discussions and, most recently, the Faces of Iraq Traveling Exhibition and receptions at the CEPA Gallery.  In addition to such collective projects, our members maintain regional calendars and discussion lists, provide logistic support for local progressive rallies and continue to develop the WNY Progressive Directory -- individual initiatives in the name of our common progressive interests.  Our general interest is in fostering collaboration for greater effectiveness in the progressive community of Western New York.  If you're an active progressive organizer and are willing to leave ideology and dogma at the door, please feel free to join us.  We find strength not just in numbers but also in good company and solidarity. • Saturday, June 21, Buffalo, Women in Black weekly vigil, every week on Saturday from 12-1 PM, Bidwell/Elmwood, no matter the weather, there's always good cheer and dignified solidarity.  Women in Black Buffalo has a great new Web site -- make a point of visiting and book-marking it at: http://wibbuffalo.net/home/index.htm   The war in Iraq and Afghanistan are reported to be over, and the dopes in the White House are declaring victory, but we know better...  We continue to have upwards of 30 vigilers every Saturday from noon to 1P.  This reflects that people are well aware of the risks that remain as long as this administration is in office.  Please continue to stand with us in this environment when other citizens report dissent to the police.  That's the battle we must continue to wage!  See also: WIB NYC BalkansNet - Home PageWIB NYC BalkansNet - Mission StatementWomen in Black - London and  History of the Women in Black

  • Saturday, June 21, Buffalo,  Anti-Casino Rally  - Bidwell & Potomac (a half block north-east of the Women in Black Rally), 12:00-2:00 PM.  If you are opposed to a Casino being built and operating in our community for ANY REASON, please plan to attend.  One hour of your time can help prevent this illegal casino from being planted forever in Erie County. Speakers include: Shakoor Aljuwani, Stan Bretton, Sandra Carubba, Arthur Eve, John Lafalce, Elizabeth Licata, Jeremy Toth, and Joel Rose.   Citizens Against Casino Gambling in Erie County (CACGEC) was formed by concerned Western New Yorkers united in the belief that casino gambling in the City of Buffalo poses a serious threat to our community. The miniscule amount of revenue that casinos might generate for the city would be far outweighed by the additional costs of law enforcement, fire protection and gaming-addiction treatment. Add to that the likelihood that casinos would drain scarce entertainment dollars from other area attractions, and it's easy to see why we think casino gambling is a bad bet for Buffalo.  For more information about the rally or about CACGEC,  contact Penny Wyatt at 885-3211 or Diane Persico at 885-4849.

Last year it received the prestigious American Book Award from the Before Columbus Foundation. The book describes both the theoretical underpinnings of nonviolence and historical incidents in which nonviolence has been used successfully. • Friday, May 23, Buffalo, NOW with Bill Moyers: Media Consolidation & The FCC, from TruthOut, Friday 23 May 2003 at 9:00 PM  (check local listings at www.pbs.org)  In just ten days on June 2, the Federal Communications Commission will announce whether it's going to allow big media to get even bigger. If Washington gives the media conglomerates a free pass to let the marketplace rule, it may be at the expense of a key element of American democracy -- the ability of journalists to be independent. But if so much is at stake, why do many believe the result of the FCC vote is a foregone conclusion? On Friday, May 23, 2003 at 9 p.m. on PBS (check local listings), NOW with Bill Moyers goes inside the lobbying effort by the media industry to influence FCC officials. The segment spotlights a Center for Public Integrity report that looks at the close ties between the FCC and the industry it regulates. Later in the program Bill Moyers interviews Executive Director of the Center for Public Integrity Chuck Lewis about the report, it's findings, and the details of how media companies have spent time and money gaining access to Washington decision makers.

Representing a diverse cross-section of Palestinian society -- from a news editor to a domestic worker to a housewife -- they candidly speak about their daily encounters with violence and their marginalization in the ideological debate concerning the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Neither political zealots nor submissive wives and mothers, they reveal the difficult task of negotiating their identity during wartime and demonstrate how the struggle for life and dignity is a universal one. Their stories challenge stereotypes of Palestinian women in the media and provide a much-needed widow into an experience rarely seen in the West.

AWARD WINNING DOCUMENTARY SERIES WITNESS RETURNS THURSDAY, JANUARY 23 AT 9 PM WITH GENERATION OF HATE  CBC Television’s WITNESS, three time Gemini award winner for Best Documentary Series, returns Thursday, January 23 at 9 p.m. with Generation of Hate. This compelling film explores the impact of western policies on Iraq and the mood of Iraqis on the eve of a possible U.S. invasion.  Emmy Award winning producer Shelley Saywell recently traveled to Iraq where she gained rare access. Her filming went far beyond the familiar images of Saddam and his many palaces and Republican Guard.. “We were looking for another view from the ground: a real-life, real street view that would take us into the psyche of young people, the bellwether of any future Iraq,” she said. “They shared their views and their lives with us, to the extent they could.” Saywell has chronicled an extraordinary cross-section of young Iraqi voices, from destitute child labourers to middle-class university students, all of whom speak in one voice regarding the West.
