Saturday, June 21, Buffalo,
Women
in Black weekly vigil, every week on Saturday from
12-1 PM, Bidwell/Elmwood, no matter the
weather, there's always good cheer and dignified solidarity. Women in
Black Buffalo has a great new Web site -- make a point of visiting and
book-marking it at:
http://wibbuffalo.net/home/index.htm The war in Iraq and
Afghanistan are reported to be over, and the dopes in the White House are
declaring victory, but we know better... We continue to have upwards of 30
vigilers every Saturday from noon to 1P. This reflects that people are well
aware of the risks that remain as long as this administration is in office.
Please continue to stand with us in this environment when other citizens
report dissent to the police. That's the battle we must continue to wage! See also:

Saturday, June 21, Buffalo, Anti-Casino
Rally - Bidwell & Potomac (a half block north-east of the
Women in Black Rally), 12:00-2:00 PM.
If you are opposed to a Casino being built and operating in our community
for ANY REASON, please plan to attend. One hour of your time can help
prevent this illegal casino from being planted forever in Erie County.
Speakers include: Shakoor Aljuwani, Stan
Bretton, Sandra Carubba, Arthur Eve, John Lafalce, Elizabeth Licata, Jeremy
Toth, and Joel Rose. Citizens Against Casino Gambling
in Erie County (CACGEC) was formed by concerned Western
New Yorkers united in the belief that casino gambling in the City of Buffalo
poses a serious threat to our community. The miniscule amount of revenue
that casinos might generate for the city would be far outweighed by the
additional costs of law enforcement, fire protection and gaming-addiction
treatment. Add to that the likelihood that casinos would drain scarce
entertainment dollars from other area attractions, and it's easy to see why
we think casino gambling is a bad bet for Buffalo. For more
information about the rally or about CACGEC, contact Penny Wyatt at
885-3211 or Diane Persico at 885-4849.

Monday, June 9, Buffalo, The
Search for a Nonviolent Future - Borders Book Signing - Michael Nagler,
at Borders at 7:00 PM on Monday evening
June 9th here in Western New York. Michael Nagler is author of Is
There No Other Way? The Search for a Nonviolent Future. Widely published in
both the fields of peace studies and ancient Indian scripture, Nagler's book
draws on the work of Gandhi and shows how both groups and individuals can
make changes to bring about nonviolence in our world. Last year it received
the prestigious American Book Award from the Before Columbus Foundation. The
book describes both the theoretical underpinnings of nonviolence and
historical incidents in which nonviolence has been used successfully. The
last few chapters describe ways we can work for the nonviolent future we all
seek. Can it be done? Nagler says yes, and shows us how it might occur.

Weekly Candlelight Vigil for Peace,
7:00 PM , Bear witness for peace, enjoy
solidarity and good music, speak-out or read a poem in a family-friendly
setting. Say yes to peace -- and no
to war, violence and military occupation everywhere. Delaware Park - Aggasiz Circle Entrance,
Parkside Ave & Route 198, Buffalo, NY, Enter Delaware Park at the Aggasiz
Circle entrance, on Parkside Ave just north of Route 198. You can only enter
when headed SOUTH on Parkside. Therefore if coming on 198, take the Parkside
exit, go north a couple of blocks, and find a way to turn around. The
entrance is marked by a park sign, and also by a street sign for E. Meadow
Dr. We will meet in the parking area about 100 yards from the park entrance.
The vigil will be visible to traffic on Parkside and the 198. At our
vigil on 4/6, there was complete consensus that we would continue to gather
at 7:00 PM in spite of the time change
and lengthening days in order to continue to encourage family participation.
A sound system will be part of the gathering and we expect musicians, poets
and speakers to start turning up as the weather improves. Those who
enjoy the candlelight vigil component will simply arrive late or remain
until an hour after darkness descends. We already have visions of lawn
chairs, barbecues and continuing friendly discussions. Join this

Friday, May 23, Buffalo,
NOW with Bill Moyers: Media Consolidation & The
FCC, from
TruthOut, Friday 23 May 2003 at 9:00 PM
(check local listings at
www.pbs.org) In just ten days on June 2, the Federal
Communications Commission will announce whether it's going to allow big
media to get even bigger. If Washington gives the media conglomerates a free
pass to let the marketplace rule, it may be at the expense of a key element
of American democracy -- the ability of journalists to be independent. But
if so much is at stake, why do many believe the result of the FCC vote is a
foregone conclusion? On Friday, May 23, 2003 at 9 p.m. on PBS (check local
listings), NOW with Bill Moyers goes inside the lobbying effort by the media
industry to influence FCC officials. The segment spotlights a Center for
Public Integrity report that looks at the close ties between the FCC and the
industry it regulates. Later in the program Bill Moyers interviews Executive
Director of the Center for Public Integrity Chuck Lewis about the report,
it's findings, and the details of how media companies have spent time and
money gaining access to Washington decision makers.

local listings for time and channel. In Buffalo it will be
9:00-11:00 PM on WIVB, Channel 4. Ed Gernon, the Executive
Producer, compared the current mood of Americans to that of the Germans who
helped Hitler rise to power. He was promptly fired for his remarks by
CBS after an eleven year tenure. According to a
Zap2it article,
"In an interview with TV Guide about the four-hour film, scheduled for May,
Gernon compares many Americans' acceptance of a war in Iraq to the fearful
climate in post-World War I Germany, of which Hitler took advantage to
become its ruler." "It basically boils down to an entire nation
gripped by fear, who ultimately chose to give up their civil rights and
plunged the whole nation into war," Gernon said in the interview. "I
can't think of a better time to examine this history than now." "Gernon's
remarks reportedly didn't go over well at CBS, which has tried very hard to
frame "Hitler" as a historical piece that in no way sensationalizes or
offers excuses for Hitler's actions.

March and Rally to urge UB to affiliate with the
WRC, (speakers, drums, puppets, cheerleading, etc.)
Gather outside the Student Union near the entrance by the Commons Wed, April
16th, 4:00 PM In the present-day
global economy, clothing is more likely than not produced in factories that
abuse or even kill their workers. As of right now, UB allows 75 companies to
manufacture UB apparel, but doesn't mandate that these companies respect
their workers' rights. More likely than not, our clothing is being made with
the blood and sweat of abused workers. This is unacceptable! The Worker
Rights Consortium (WRC) is a monitoring body that exists to help colleges
and universities assure their apparel is made under safe and fair working
conditions. Already over 100 schools are affiliated with the WRC, including
Yale, Cornell, Notre Dame, and Ohio State. The UB Students Against
Sweatshops (UBSAS) have been meeting with the UB Administration since
the fall, urging them to join the swelling ranks of schools affiliated with
the WRC. However... THE UB ADMINISTRATION HAS SAID THEY WILL NOT
AFFILIATE WITH THE WRC!!! Tell UB President Greiner what you think...

April 1, Buffalo,
The War We Won't See - at 7:30 PM,
the Student Union Theater, Room 201, University of Buffalo North
Campus. G. Simon Harak, one of the founding members of the
humanitarian group
Voices in the Wilderness, will speak on "The War We Won't See: the
hidden effects on Iraqi Civilians". Since 1998 Harak has worked
fulltime for the Chicago-based organization, which has been nominated for a
Nobel Peace Prize three years in a row for its efforts to end the US/UN
economic sanctions against Iraq.
Voices in the
Wilderness sends delegations of average citizens, teachers, social
workers, authors, health care professionals, trades people, and church
workers to witness the impact of the immoral and unjust economic sanctions
that target the regime of Saddam Hussein but in fact punish
millions of Iraqi people, young and old. For this violation the US
Treasury has fined the group $50,000; Voices has responded by refusing to
pay the fine, but instead continues raising money and medicine toward
humanitarian and peacemaking efforts in Iraq. In the late 1990s, G.
Simon Harak visited Iraq 3 times to inspect the damage of the war, bombing,
and sanctions. While there, he spoke with UN and humanitarian workers,
and with religious, educational and community leaders to determine the
effects of the 12-year siege of Iraq.

This is Not Living,
8:00 PM at Hallwalls. Film showing and fundraiser for
the Institute of Research and Education on Women & Gender. Hallwalls
Contemporary Arts Center, TriMain Building, 2495 Main Street, Suite 425.
Doors open at 6:00 PM, screening at
8:00 PM. $10 at the door. Director: Alia Arasoughly
Country: Palestine, Documentary Color, 2001, 42 minutes. Exploring the
devastating effects of military occupation, terror and isolation, this
deeply moving piece explores the lives of eight Palestinian women and their
struggle to live normal lives amidst the degrading drama of war.
Representing a diverse cross-section of Palestinian society -- from a news
editor to a domestic worker to a housewife -- they candidly speak about
their daily encounters with violence and their marginalization in the
ideological debate concerning the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Neither
political zealots nor submissive wives and mothers, they reveal the
difficult task of negotiating their identity during wartime and demonstrate
how the struggle for life and dignity is a universal one. Their stories
challenge stereotypes of Palestinian women in the media and provide a
much-needed widow into an experience rarely seen in the West.

25, Buffalo, Hallwalls: WHERE'S THE
DISSENT? - 30 Years of Protest Films at Hallwalls,
Filmmaker Lynne Sachs in person Saturday, January 25, 2003 at
8 PM, $6 general, $5 students and
seniors, $4 members. Artist Pat Oleszko sounded the cry of "Where's
the dissent?" during her performance at Hallwalls in September 2002, and
she's not alone in her desire and need to hear opposition to U.S. military
might. This collection of post World War II U.S. protest films, most made to
protest the war in Vietnam, is a reminder of the need for resistance to
violence as well as an earnest call to artists for action today.

23, Buffalo, CBC News Witness Documentary
Series. See
CBC announcement. AWARD WINNING DOCUMENTARY SERIES WITNESS RETURNS
THURSDAY, JANUARY 23 AT 9 PM WITH
GENERATION OF HATE CBC Television’s WITNESS, three time Gemini award
winner for Best Documentary Series, returns Thursday, January 23 at 9 p.m.
with Generation of Hate. This compelling film explores the impact of western
policies on Iraq and the mood of Iraqis on the eve of a possible U.S.
invasion. Emmy Award winning producer Shelley Saywell recently
traveled to Iraq where she gained rare access. Her filming went far beyond
the familiar images of Saddam and his many palaces and Republican Guard..
“We were looking for another view from the ground: a real-life, real street
view that would take us into the psyche of young people, the bellwether of
any future Iraq,” she said. “They shared their views and their lives with
us, to the extent they could.” Saywell has chronicled an extraordinary
cross-section of young Iraqi voices, from destitute child labourers to
middle-class university students, all of whom speak in one voice regarding
the West.

22, Buffalo, Hallwalls: GET YOUR WAR ON
- An Evening with David Rees presented by Hallwalls and Medaille College, at
Hallwalls, Wednesday, January 22, 2003 at 8 PM.
$5 general, $4 students/seniors/members, free to Medaille students.
Hallwalls is excited to be hosting a personal appearance by on-line poltical
strip cartoonist David Rees, one of the most original (not to mention
funniest) political satirists working in any medium today. Indeed, with the
nearly total abdication by mainstream media (including most daily editorial
cartoonists) of any critical role in the face of rising war and
homeland-security fever, alternative strip catoonists like Rees, Ted Rall,
Tom Tomorrow, and a few others, provide among the few pockets of dissent.
Rees is being sponsored in Buffalo by the Humanities Department and Creative
Writing program of Medaille College.

Road to Baghdad, 7
PM EST, a Dateline NBC program that will feature a segment on
Peaceful Tomorrows' Colleen Kelly. Those who attended the
WNY Peace
Center's 2002 Annual Benefit Dinner heard Catherine Allison, another
Peaceful Tomorrows member whose aunt was killed in the World Trade Center on
September 11, 2001. She spoke in opposition to war with Iraq and for
seeking non-violent solutions to all world problems. This group of
people, who suffered the greatest possible losses and have the most rational
basis for seeking vengeance, present a moving and compelling case for
avoiding war and further violence.
