The event will take place on Tuesday, April 8, 2002 at 7:30 pm at the Buffalo Erie County Historical Society Auditorium, 25 Nottingham Court in Buffalo. Schechter will speak on "Communicating for a Better World: Challenges and Possibilities" as part of a new series of educational events called "Visions for a Better World." "This educational series is designed to provide an alternative vision of what kind of world we seek, especially in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks," said James Wittebols, member of the Peace Center committee which has joined with the Historical Society in planning the series. "We believe there is a thirst for knowledge and understanding among many of our fellow citizens about the role our country is playing in the world. And as citizens concerned with building a more just and democratic world, we feel a need to contribute to our community's dialogue about these issues." Schechter's background makes him an ideal person to kick off the series. Schechter's career has been dedicated to giving a voice to the people and issues which are not adequately addressed by the mainstream media. An Emmy Award-winning former producer for ABC's 20/20, Danny left the mainstream media to produce television and films designed to bring a critical voice on the global issues of the day. He produced 156 episodes of the public television series "South Africa Now" and co-produced "Rights and Wrongs: Human Rights Television." Schechter is a graduate of Cornell University, holds a master's degree from the London School of Economics and was a Nieman Fellow in Journalism at Harvard University. He is a recipient of the IRIS award, the George Polk Award, the Major Armstrong Award, and honors from the National Association of Black Journalists.
