From: "June Licence" Subject: Michael Nagler, author of nonviolence book coming to Buffalo Date: Thursday, May 08, 2003 9:05 PM Hi all, I know some of you will get repeats of this, and for that I apologize. But, I'm very excited to announce that Michael Nagler, author of, Is There No Other Way? The search for a Nonviolent Future will be doing a talk and a book signing at Borders at 7:00 pm on Monday evening June 9th here in Western New York. Some of you know Michael's work from the Quaker adult book rewading group at the Buffalo meeting. Others of you may know him from meditation practice or from reading his book in other places. The book was reviewed in Friends'Journal (Quaker publication) in December 2002 and received the American book Award from the Before Columbus Foundation. Michael is a delightful speaker and will talk and sign books. Borders is having (because it was a nationally organized gig for Borders Stores) Wayne LaPierre, VP of the NRA speaking about his book, Guns Freedom and Terrorism the following evening.... Please help show Borders that peace is more popular than guns! (By the way, Dan Zicari, the manager at Borders is very pleased to have Michael coming to speak first!) I have enclosed a brief Blurb about Michael and the book. Please distribute this as widely as possible as this was just planned and may not be able to be included in the Borders Newsletter. Invite your friends for what is sure to be an illuminating evening. I've never met anyone who can tell so many historical anecdotes about places where nonviolence has worked and how we might use Gandhi's lessons for today. Thanks so much for whatever you can do to further attendance at this event. Here's a blurb -- feel free to use it: Michael Nagler is author of Is There No Other Way? The Search for a Nonviolent Future. Widely published in both the fields of peace studies and ancient Indian scripture, Nagler's book draws on the work of Gandhi and shows how both groups and individuals can make changes to bring about nonviolence in our world. Last year it received the prestigious American Book Award from the Before Columbus Foundation. The book describes both the theoretical underpinnings of nonviolence and historical incidents in which nonviolence has been used successfully. The last few chapters describe ways we can work for the nonviolent future we all seek. Can it be done? Nagler says yes, and shows us how it might occur. Dr. Nagler is professor emeritus of classical languages at the University of California, Berkeley and the founder and chairperson of the University of California at Berkeley Peace and Conflict Studies program. He is well known for his humorous and illuminating talks. thanks again -- still praying for peace Sue Tannehill
