From: "treesrmeandu" To: ; Subject: [wny-discuss] five Bflo arts/media educational anti-war events Date: Sunday, February 09, 2003 1:04 PM Peaceful Greetings -- Below are five announcements for five separate but related anti-war events going on around Bflo in the next week and longer. They are -- chronlogically -- 1st -- a poetry jam of sorts(details follow); 2nd -- is an event produced by UB's women's studies dept; 3rd -- a film at the Market Arcade (both of these are on Friday -- one in the afternoon, the other in the evening); 4th -- The Women's Film Festival; 5th/final is one we can hope will not happen at all...It's the plan for what we can do if and when the U.S. thwarts the opinion/advice of most of the world and actually attacks Iraq. Contact info is provided where possible. [ I can't figure out why the organizers called it the "war plan", b/c it's a plan for taking a stand for peace, but the bigger picture is to be aware that while there's all the talk of war, there's plans for peaceful actions, too. ] --Apologies for cross postings.-- This (so far informal) listserv is intended to inform and accompany us in our various paths to peace and justice locally and personally as well as nationally and earthfully. My main focus is arts/media and educational efforts. A lot of info comes my way with hopes that I can pass it on to a variety of contacts...I send it to you with the same hope...Pass it on (unless otherwise requested). While I am recovering my email/announcement/newsletter voice, please be aware that I am still unclear my list...If you don't want to receive this info from me, please let me know, and I will remove your email adrs pronto. Thanks -- roxanne "...got to kick at the darkness 'till it bleeds daylight..." (--Bruce Cockburn -- "Lovers in a Dangerous Time") "...my country 'tis of thee...Will we ever live long enuf to undo everything they done to you?..." (--paraphrase of Ani DiFranco's "My Country 'tis of Thee") ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On Febuary 10th, the Women's Studies dept (WS 213 collective) at UB is setting up a variety of tables in the Student Union to present various groups having to do with women/war/women's issues. His wry, ultimately humane fatalism suggests that Palestinians and Jews are, in some respects, not so far apart." - A.O. Scott, NEW YORK TIMES "Elia Suleiman's craft, wit, sense of righteousness and fairness not only seduce the moviegoer in me, they compel my world citizenship. Suleiman's poetic essay on Palestinian oppression is the most extraordinary agit-pop since Spike Lee's 1989 Do the Right Thing. At times a silent comedy, a musical provocation, a romantic tragedy, this film brilliantly encapsulates Palestinian-Jewish attraction/repulsion." - Armond White, NEW YORK PRESS "Suleiman uses the most subversive weapon of all - humor - to portray the tumultuous mood in his homeland. In the laughter Suleiman creates from such bleakness, he and the viewer experience a euphoric sensation of triumph in the face of adversity!" -Kirk Honeycutt, HOLLYWOOD REPORTER "Elia Suleiman's 'DIVINE INTERVENTION' is a very personal meditation on love, life, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In turn laconic, witty and outrageous, Suleiman works in slow, poetic scenes that build to hilarious climaxes!" - Jurgen Fauth, ABOUT.COM "Suleiman's ideas work spectacularly well - as in the sequence of a red balloon festooned with Yasser Arafat's smiling face floating across the Jerusalem cityscape..." - Derek Elley, VARIETY February 14 - Market Arcade Film & Arts Centre - Buffalo, NY Please do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further information. February 13, 20, 27, March 6, 20, 27 at the Market Arcade (639 Main Street, Buffalo, NY) And Special Fundraiser Event at Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center (TriMain Building, 2495 Main Street, Suite 425) on Saturday, March 29 at 6:00 pm. This film series presents the unrecognized role women have played in their struggle for liberation, both political and personal. This is a struggle which does not define itself in terms of geographical borders, but rather in terms of universal human rights. In this festival, the personal stories of women's resistance, as we see in WILL IT SNOW FOR CHRISTMAS? are intertwined with women's political struggles, as in films like FLAME and FIDEL, about the Cuban and Zimbabwean revolutions. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A draft War Plan for Buffalo is now posted at: www.BuffaloPeacePeople.org/warplan A small group is working on refining the plan; contact the WNY Peace Center at 894-2013 if you'd like to actively help.
