From: "Western Regional Office" Subject: Bill of Rights Defense Campaign Date: Monday, September 29, 2003 2:35 PM Thank you for your support at the meeting September 24. The clear dangers posed by aspects of the Patriot Act which seek to curtail civil liberties and increase the power of the government to interfere in the legal activities of citizens are difficult to overstate, in spite of Mr. Ashcroft's attempts to minimize thiose dangers to the public and to marginalize those who dissent. We'd like to invite you to a meeting on October 8 at 7 p.m. in order to keep the momentum going and plan specifically what actions we will take. We can already see posibilities for effective action in three areas: drafting resolutions against the Patriot Act to present to the Buffalo Common Council and the Erie County Legislature; establishing an educational/outreach program to spread the word as far as possible; and organizing a coalition campaign to connect with other groups and organizations which share our concerns. We hope you will be able to join us on October 8th. Please let us know whether or not you'll be able to attend. We will hold the meeting at either the NYCLU office on South Elmwood or the UUC Church, depending on how many people plan to attend. Please call us at (716) 852-4033 or e-mail us at wro@nyclubuffalo.org, and we'll let you know the location as soon as possible. Sincerely, Jeanne-Noel Mahoney WNY Bill of Rights Defense Campaign Steering Committee Western Regional Director, NYCLU
