Colombia is the most dangerous country in the world for unions according to the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions. Last year alone, 201 union activists were assassinated in Colombia, three quarters of them while they were engaged in union activities. That was 90% of the total number of unionists assassinated worldwide (223) last year. Colombian labor leader Hector Giraldo will speak about how the IMF, the World Bank, and the U.S. military aid program known as ?Plan Colombia? are contributing to this climate of terror. Multinational corporations like Coca-Cola and Drummond Coal also rely on the paramilitary forces to repress and murder workers.
